When Should My Yard Be Mowed for the Last Time?
Deciding when to mow for the last time is tricky! There’s not an exact date to stop trimming your North Kansas City, Missouri, grass. The change of seasons isn’t set by the calendar, but rather by climatic conditions. The growing season could be over in mid-October or mid-December. So, what do you do? You want to keep your yard looking fresh and healthy as long as possible because its appearance impacts how your home looks overall too. Most healthy maintained lawns are mowed to a height of between 3 and 4 inches tall during prime growing season. However, when the calendar trips over into fall we begin thinking about that final mowing for the season. Gradually begin cutting your yard a half inch shorter once you can go between 10 and 14 days between mowing. Remember that your grass is healtiest when you don’t trim more than 30% of the grass at any one time. So, for example, if your grass is at 3 inches, 30% of the growth would be 1 inch, so you wouldn’t want to go directly to the 2 inch height that is optimal for the winter season.
Why two inches tall? This height tends to be the optimal height for reducing the chances for mold fungi to take over the yard during the winter. Keep mowing as long as your lawn keeps growing, don’t stop. Once you’ve reached the final 2 inch mark, watch how much the yard is growing so you don’t go over the 30% mark in growth before you mow again. No sense stunting your yard’s growth after you’ve worked so hard for it to look good, right?
Stay off the grass when frost is on the lawn, this damages the grass blades and can cause uneven patches in your yard. Finally, consider using a mulching mower late in the growing season to pulverize the leaves and provides instant mulch for your yard.
